Welcome!

Thank you for visiting my Web site.  My name is Rob Theriault (pronounced like Ontario without the “On”). I am a professor at Georgian College in Ontario, Canada where I teach a 2 year Primary Care Paramedic Program and a 1 year post-diploma Advanced Care Paramedic program.  My reason for creating this site, was twofold: 1. Because I am deeply grateful for everything I’ve learned over the years from other paramedics, physicians and many other health professionals, and I want to give back.  If you visit the eLearner (for paramedics and those thinking or embarking on this career) and eEducator (for EMS/paramedic educators) tabs to the right, you’ll see hundreds of educational Podcasts  which I hope you will find helpful in your learning journey.  2. I am interested in how paramedics and students learn and I am constantly exploring new ways of facilitating learning. In addition to teaching, I continue to work on weekends and through the summer as an Advanced Care Paramedic (ACP). I  have been in this profession since 1984 and I have worked in Ontario and British Columbia. I’ve also been very fortunate to have lived through some of the most exciting changes in our profession’s history. This is a young profession, but one that has grown up quickly. Paramedicine is the step sister of emergency services and the foster child of health care. It is young but evolving rapidly. It is still developing it’s identity and trying to establish itself as a distinct and globally recognized profession, separate from the other emergency services, distinct as a health discipline and equally important and indispensable as any profession would hope to be. I hope you enjoy this Website, my Podcasts, and I hope you’ll post your comments and constructive feedback 🙂 Resources Videos If you visit my YouTube Channel, please let the ads play through. This provides a very small source of income that recognizes the effort I’ve put into writing my books and creating the videos. My books: Cardiac Dysrhythmia Interpretation Workbook and 12-15 Lead ECG Interpretation Workbook can be found on Amazon: Canada, United States, AustraliaUnited Kingdom, France, Deutschland, Italy, Spain

Hi! I enjoyed this phrase: Paramedicine is the step sister of emergency services and the foster child of health care.

You captured the tricky place that paramedicine has found itself. It’s great that the people are smart, resilient, and forward-thinking!

Hi Rob, nice to have found your blog. I’m a paramedic since 1991 in Riverside,Ca. Involved in EMS since 1987. I am currently an EMS educator myself for a program in Riverside. I am finishing a degree in Organizational Leadership and we have a research paper to write. My thesis poses that EMS educators with a good amount of field experience AND higher learning academic degrees will result in higher student retention rates. So many of us start teaching after leaving patient care and only have our licenses, but no AA, Bachelors, Masters degrees. We have a wealth of experience in the field , but that doesnt always mean we will make good teachers. I am looking for input from my colleagues on their opinions to my proposed thesis, based on their experiences in teaching. Do you think an academic degree will improve student retention, or is field experience enough when it comes to teaching? I would greatly appreciate any thoughts you care to share that I can use for my research. Responses are anonymous and will not be named in print within my paper unless your permission is given to do so..but it is not required for my purposes. Im just trying to get some numbers on what makes for good student retention. Thanks for any help. – M.White,EMT-P
